Far too prevalent in our society is the disparity in our educational system. The disparity is often revealed in the type of educational experiences that our young people are exposed to, or denied, in their classrooms. Yet we all know that the type of education and experiences that young person is exposed to can have a significant impact on their future. Therefore, if school systems are not able to provide its young people the type of experiences and education they need, what if we brought the classroom to the community?
Think about it. What if we were able to bring African American history into the households of young people who wanted to learn but there were no courses offered? What if we were able to teach life lessons for young people to improve their life outcomes? What if we were able to engage with mentors about being better mentors? What if we were able to break down the one dimensional walls which has defined our educational approach for over a century and bring the classroom into the community? Could we bring a greater sense of equity into education? Could we improve the educational experiences to those often disenfranchised the most? My mission is to do just that.
